Baby Boomer Generation Drives Housing Market

The Baby Boomer Generation, ages 55+, are currently the driving force in today’s dynamic housing market. It is estimated that Baby Boomers will purchase over half of the new homes in the United Sates over the next 5 years. Consisting of approximately 79 million Baby Boomers, those in this demographic are living longer, healthier, family and community centered lives. Consequently, they are looking for adult housing that meets these active and social living needs. Here are a few features that are attractive to this segment of our population.

Great Room Entertaining Space

Because of their love for entertaining and for bringing family and community together, Baby Boomers need a space to foster these gatherings.  Open space kitchen, living and dining room areas or great rooms generate conversation, comfort, and convenience. We all know that the kitchen is the heart of the house. By opening the kitchen to the dining and living areas, the heart knows no boundaries. The kitchen should include quality appliances, a surplus of counter space, and a plethora of cabinets/drawer space. The Great Room wouldn’t be complete without a warm, inviting fireplace. Seating areas at a dining room table, kitchen counter bar and living area create inviting, inclusive conversation.

Private Outdoor Living Space

The aging Baby Boomer generation values the connection to community and family. An outdoor living space provides a casual entertainment setting while expanding the living area. The warm, inviting living space creates a connection to the environment while providing the comforts and convenience of a kitchen and sitting area. The ideal outdoor living space includes a wet bar, outdoor grill and a comfortable seating area. Other possibilities include an outdoor fireplace or fire pit, radiant heating and outdoor sound system. The outdoor living space is a perfect place for family or community gatherings.

Multi-Purpose Garage Plus

The Baby Boomer generation lives a more active, vigorous lifestyle and requires a space that fosters this lifestyle. The garage is a convenient place to store the family vehicles, but it should also accommodate active gear such as skis, bikes and camping gear. The garage should provide the space to tinker with these items: a countertop workbench, sink, benches and tools. Baby Boomers might use the garage as a place to work on hobbies or crafts. Storage and access to gardening tools is a plus. In the mountain communities, the garage can double as a “mudroom” or can be the entryway to the essential mudroom.
